Join the Tech Policy Lab for a talk with Deborah Morgan from the University of Bath.

Her talk will be titled “Anticipatory regulatory processes and AI systems.” Anticipatory regulatory processes can be defined as ‘a set of techniques and principles to help regulators be more proactive, coordinated and democratic in their approach to emerging technologies’ (Nesta, 2019). Regulatory sandboxes are one example of such ex ante approaches and feature within the European Union’s recently proposed Artificial Intelligence Act (Article 53 and Recital 72). This talk aims to explore such anticipatory regulatory approaches in more detail and discuss how such methods may intersect with value sensitive design.

Deborah Morgan is a PhD researcher within the Centre for Accountable, Responsible and Transparent AI in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath, UK. Her current PhD research explores the legal and societal challenges of regulating AI systems, in particular anticipatory regulatory approaches and regulatory sandboxes. She holds an LLB Law degree and qualified as a solicitor, practising as a corporate projects lawyer in the UK. She has also worked within communications and in the education sector. Deborah holds a MSt in Education from the University of Cambridge, where her research explored feedback methods within narrative writing, and completed a MRes in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bath.
