The key to decreasing bias in the hiring process lies with keeping human intelligence engaged in the process, a recent article in Inc. declares, citing a study led by Co-Director Aylin Caliskan.
In the “No Thoughts Just AI: Biased LLM Hiring Recommendations Alter Human Decision Making and Limit Human Autonomy” study, Caliskan and her team look at how biased LLM recommendations influence the people making hiring decisions. To counter this influence, the Inc. article advises tuning AI models so that they don’t exhibit bias, have hiring staff take a test to detect subconscious biases before making choices, and always have a human component in the review process.
The article states “even though many companies are racing to adopt cutting-edge AI in an effort to reduce costs or streamline business processes, the tools themselves are not fool-proof. Having a human in the loop is always advisable before you make a decision based on an AI’s advice—no matter what type of business decision is in question.”
