A spring court order preventing ChatGPT from honoring user requests to delete the history of personal accounts should spark conversation, TPL Co-Director Ryan Calo says.
A recent USA Today article examines the impact of the order and the privacy concerns that may emerge because of it. The order stems from a lawsuit around copyright infringement filed by The New York Times in 2023. The suit alleges OpenAI used NYT articles to train generative AI models and say the ChatGPT user data could contain potential evidence to support that claim.
And for the discomfort users may feel knowing their data can’t be deleted? Calo recommends staying calm and carrying on using ChatGPT, just more cautiously.
