Co-Director Yoshi Kohno was recently honored as part of a research team for work done to secure automobiles from cyber attacks. USENIX awarded the Test of Time to the group’s paper titled “Comprehensive Experimental Analyses of Automotive Attack Surfaces,” which was published in 2011. The Test of Time recognizes papers that have had a lasting impact on their fields. Since its publication, the team’s research has helped lead to new standards for motor vehicle security and put the brakes on automobile cyberattacks. Read the full article from the Allen School here.
The team included Lab Faculty Associate Franziska Roesner. The research was previously also honored with the Golden Goose Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Kohno was also part of another team awarded by USENIX Security 2025. “Analyzing the AI Nudification Application Ecosystem,” co-authored by researchers from the University of Florida, the University of Washington and Georgetown University, has been named the runner-up for the 2025 Internet Defense Prize. The work was led by University of Florida PhD student Cassidy Gibson, co-authored with Natalie Grace Brigham, University of Washington; as well as PhD students from the Universities of Florida and Washington and faculty from the University of Florida.
The Internet Defense Prize recognizes and rewards research that meaningfully makes the internet more secure. The intent of the award is to inspire researchers to focus on high-impact areas of research.
