Co-Director Mentioned in an Article About AI and Tort Law

Chief Executive

In a recent article with Chief Executive, TPL Co-Director Ryan Calo speaks on a possible but terrifying possibility of artificial intelligence. AI is designed to create better, faster, and more efficient solutions for humans. But, who is responsible for the damages that AI may create? Calo states that even in an effort to maximize efficiency, AI can be deadly. For example, a machine may conclude that charging itself throughout the night is productive, but if stuck in a garage, may result in carbon monoxide poisoning. The difficulty of assigning responsibility onto the creator sparks debates about tort law, and it questions the extent to which we can predict every terrifying scenario. For now, the U.S., plaintiff lawyers, and innovators hope to uncover the “deep pockets behind AI.”
