A new article in USA Today examines Google’s announcement that it will automatically delete location data for visits to “particularly personal” medical facilities, including abortion clinics. The policy comes in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs, which has raised new fears that personal data may be used by authorities in states where abortion is now illegal. TPL Co-Director Ryan Calo was cited in the article, criticizing Google’s move as “same old, same old” and writing that the policy only consitutes “certain narrow changes to its practices.” However, Calo warns that “the onus remains fundamentally on the consumer to try to manage their own privacy,” especially given that Google still keeps records of sensitive data such as search history.
