TPL Co-Director Ryan Calo writes an article with the Wire Science to warn the public of the ongoing existential issues concerning artificial intelligence. Calo argues that the threat of AI is not as serious as these industries make them out to be. Of course, there are possibilities of risk of extinction, but Calo suggests that these chances are low. Instead, he assures the public that existential threat is unlikely. He claims that AI industries have created this fear to market the importance of AI, and to shy away from the immediate harms that the technology has already created. Lastly, Calo urges the public to consider the immediate issues of AI, and calls for industries and everyone involved, to address the current harms now.
