Research by Co-Director Aylin Caliskan and UW Information School Ph.D. student Kyra Wilson was named one of the top 10 stories in ethics and responsible AI for 2024 by the Montreal AI Ethics Institute.
The AI Ethics Brief post notes that “Gender, Race, and Intersectional Bias in Resume Screening via Language Model Retrieval” highlights the threat that automated systems pose to social equity, potentially encoding discriminatory practices and undermining diversity efforts.
MAEI predicts that the research may impact the “development of more robust fairness metrics and mandatory bias audits” and the establishment of “comprehensive policies and procedures for the use of generative AI, including regular audits to detect and mitigate biases, and the implementation of guidelines to ensure ethical AI deployment.”
