A group of high school students from around the world visited the Tech Policy Lab in June. Their trip to Seattle was the first destination on an itinerary of five sites around the country. Lab staff shared research across computer science, information science and law, and also presented about the Society + Technology initiative.
One student noted on LinkedIn that the information “was a great reminder that technical innovation and smart policy need to go hand-in-hand.”

This spring and summer, the Lab welcomed visiting scholar Maria Kruusement. She is Estonian and is currently a master’s student at the European School of Political and Social Sciences in France. During her time at UW she worked on a project on quantum computing, which supported the paper “Quantum Bureaucracies,” co-authored by Co-Director Ryan Calo. During her visit, she also was active in the TPL community, attending Tech Policy Discussions and sharing work with members of the Lab.

Egypt

A delegation of leaders from Egypt visited in May as part of a partnership between the World Affairs Council and the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program.
The “Expanding AI Horizons by Promoting Innovation and Trusted Partnerships” trip included goals around examining how AI policy frameworks can drive innovation, protecting critical infrastructure, balancing risks and benefits, attracting investment, and fostering partnerships between Egyptian stakeholders and U.S. counterparts.
The group met with Tech Policy Lab staff to understand how they collaborate with government institutions and other UW faculty and departments, and produce policy-driven research in AI and technology. They explored topics in AI policy and research and the intersection of law and emerging technologies. They also learned from PhD student Kyra Wilson, who shared research on AI bias in hiring, and received copies of Diverse Voices and Telling Stories.
