Short stories, fiction and podcasts bring light to diverse perspectives and new ways of thinking. This medium exposes policymakers to new voices, ideas and frames that can help them communicate risks and legitimate stakeholders and their concerns.
The Northwest Science Writers Association hosted an event featuring the Tech Policy Lab’s Telling Stories Book. Lab Co-Directors Batya Friedman and Ryan Calo, along with featured author Nnnenna Nwakanma, read their respective stories from the book and discussed the inspiration for the book and the individual stories.
Intended for policymakers, technologists, educators and others, this international collection of 19 short stories delves into AI’s cultural impacts with hesitation and wonder. Authors from Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, India, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, the United States, and elsewhere vividly recount the anticipated influences of AI on love, time, justice, identity, language, trust, and knowledge through the power of narrative.
“Our Reality: A Novella,” authored by Co-Director Tadayoshi Kohno, explores racism and the role of technology in a highly digital future world. The story encourages readers to consider the relationship between society and technology. The publication includes a section of “Questions for Readers,” which prompts reflection and critical thinking about the topics presented in the text.
The UW Tech Policy Lab and Value Sensitive Design Lab and the Methow Valley radio station KTRT 97.5 FM “The Root” are pleased to present “On the Steppe,” a radio series on designing and using technology wisely. In these conversations, Lab Co-Director Emeritus Batya Friedman and KTRT Radio Program Manager Don Ashford think about how we shape technology, how technology shapes us, and how we can grow our moral and technical imaginations.
